CUBANITO Latin Vibe, 25th July 2004 Cubanito's main strength at present - apart from the consistent excellence of their collective musicianship - is the uncommon songwriting talent of lead singer/tres-guitarist JUAN CUNITO. I had the pleasure of hosting the BBC Radio Latin Stage at the world-famous Womad Festival on the day before Latin Vibe's Cubanito date, so I had a good idea of what Cubanito might be playing - because Juanito (in his 'Solo' role) was one my Stage's guest artists on the day! And anyone who sees Cubanito play will concur in my view that Juan is a star in the making. At least 70% of their live material is written by Juanito at present - and what songs! Think Juan Luis Guerra, Ruben Blades..you name it. Poems that speak to all Latinos, regardless of their class, colour, religious or political beliefs. After a quiet start, the band rocked the crowd to there and back. There was a point at the end of the last set - people shouting for a FOURTH encore - when the band said:'That's it- sorry! No, that really IS it!' Cubanito will be back in the next few months - but always remember where you saw them first! |
