CUBANITO
Latin Vibe, 27th December 2004
After some three or four appearances over the years at Latin
Vibe, Cubanito have upped their game from being 'just another' entertaining
latin dance band to become one of the finest in the land. And they
do this by keeping it rootsy - good vocals, percussion, acoustic tres
guitar, occasionally (as today) a keyboard - and that's about it.
This is warm, funky beach-party music - but the extra ingredient is
the outstanding repertoire of own material composed chiefly by lead
singer/tresero Jesus Cutino. Although firmly rooted in dancefloor
sensibilities, Cutino's melodies and lyrics owe as much to the nueva
trova school of latino songwriting - Pablo Milanes, Silvio Rodriguez,
Juan Luis Guerra and the like - as to son and salsa. Now we need an
LP: who's going to sign them?
